To The Graves
Poem: Henry Clark
The poem was published in the Boston Globe in 1905 on the day Graves Light was first lit. I set it to the tune Bay of Suvla by Nicholas Smyth of The Dreadnoughts. I sing this song on the Lighthouse Cruise of Boston Harbor I lead through May 12th. www.cityexperiences.com/boston/city-cruises/lighthouse-and-outer-harbor-cruise/

Padstow Drinking Song - David Coffin with John Roberts and Tony Barrand
God Bless David! Hope you are doing well! Still love listening to your music! Wish i could see you live.
I enjoyed this rendition better than both Archie Fisher's and Stan Roger's. Clear and solid singing with simple but effective instrumental backup. I'm going to learn this song from this rendition and use my hurdy-gurdy as a simple backup instrument. I'll be happy if it is only half as good. Great job!
What an astounding voice and beautiful performance. Thank you David!! Lyrics … It's a damn tough life full of toil and strife We whalermen undergo And we won't give a damn when the gale is done How hard the winds do blow … For We're homeward bound from the Arctic Ground With a good ship taut and free And we don't give a damn when we drink our rum With the girls of Old Maui … Rolling down to Old Maui, me boys Rolling down to Old Maui We're homeward bound from the Arctic Ground Rolling down to Old Maui … Once more we sail with a Northerly gale Through the ice, and wind, and rain Them coconut fronds, them tropical shores We soon shall see again … For Six hellish months we passed away On the cold Kamchatka sea But now we're bound from the Arctic ground Rolling down to Old Maui … Rolling down to Old Maui, me boys Rolling down to Old Maui We're homeward bound from the Arctic Ground Rolling down to Old Maui … Once more we sail the Northerly gale Towards our Island home Our whaling done, out mainmast sprung And we ain't got far to roam … Our stans'l booms is carried away What care we for that sound A living gale is after us Thank God we're homeward bound … Rolling down to Old Maui, me boys Rolling down to Old Maui We're homeward bound from the Arctic Ground Rolling down to Old Maui … How soft the breeze through the island trees Now the ice is far astern Them native maids, them tropical glades Is awaiting our return … Even now their big, brown eyes look out Hoping some fine day to see Our baggy sails running 'fore the gales Rolling down to Old Maui … Rolling down to Old Maui, me boys Rolling down to Old Maui We're homeward bound from the Arctic Ground Rolling down to Old Maui Rolling down to Old Maui, me boys Rolling down to Old Maui We're homeward bound from the Arctic Ground Rolling down to Old Maui... Very impressive loudness
I felt like I could smell the pine needles when I heard your wonderful singing - a welcome gift in my treeless, urban abode! Thank you.
Wow wow wow...a real bukkaneer😊😊😊
Dan Hagman?
And you'll all hang up on me...🎶
I absolutely love how you sing out with your full voice as if you're doing it in a big hall without a microphone, rather than toning it down for a small recording room. The acoustics of that room are fantastic as-is, but even accounting for that first, you project incredibly well. Too many singers ruin their potential by relying on post-processing. Not you, sir. Not you.
David Coffin your voice has just sent shivers down my spine ❤ singing to my ancestors 💋
NGL, the change from “a main hatchway caved in” to “it grew dark, it was then” threw me off, but it’s a good trade for the tone.
That's was awesome David - "I am the shanty man"
It's as epic as the old chariot in Portsmouth. Much love!
Definitely going to have this on while playing Sea of Thieves.
This cover gave me chills, in a good way. Always enjoy hearing you sing Mr. Coffin! Bravo!
U can see the old sailers halling the main up the mast to this shanty
You never cease to amaze me. Very good
That´s strong. Very strong.
Never row upstream me boys
Truly an AWESOME rendition! This is also one of my favorites, the Marseillaise of the Reformation!
What a wonderfull voice 😍
You rock!
Have to say a wonderful cover of Miracle of Sounds track, and thank you for giving him credit. So many people who cover it don't do that.
I got goosebumps.
I just came here after watching The North Water.... yea, goosebumps.
@@DaviSouza-ru3ui Me too, The North Water that is. The one he did at the Portsmouth Maritime folk festival was quite amazing too. It's on piscataquaproduction channel.
All it takes is a great voice to turn most every poem a song!
5 years later and I’m still listening! When I was a young teen I bussed tables and I came upon his video “Roll the Old Chariot” when doing homework in the back office. Got me through some hard times 😂 we just kept on rolling the old chariot along 🫡
Sir, you are the best, so autentic. Salty winds and grog, and sea, only sea
Saw you play a concert in a pavillion in a Boston park when i was a child...like 15-20 years ago?? It made a big impression on me & i always think of you when these whaling ballads & chanteys are trending. When im feeling sad or stuck i still often sing, "oh if i had the wings of a goney bird, i would spread them and fly home..."
Thank you so much for sharing! It is nice to see that there are musicians that can embrace also the less serious creations. :) Love both your classic shanties and songs like these.
Im so glad I checked the channel! I love hearing your voice in these legendary songs❤
Wow. What a fabulous voice. Very good
I've never heard thisbsong before, but why does it sound so familiar..
I love this song :) Greetings from Gdańsk, Poland
Wonderful
Hello David, thankyou so much for this, this is my favourite shanty, would it be possible for you to upload this version to Spotify as well?
I believe I have a version on Spotify already.
Great job!
Love it!
Is that the Irish flute?
Absolutely Glorious. As always
This song holds a special place in my heart. I work in forestry in central Ohio. We have rare Burr Oak, Blue Ash and Washington Hawthorn. I sing this song every time I call the birds to come eat.
Fantastic
The amount of energy, passion, and unity this brings is outstanding. Thank you, Mr. Coffin, May the wind in your sails never falter.
True legend.🙏
Cool!
Your voice is amazing... Wow. Thank you!
So happy to hear a new song! Great, as always.
Incredible talent. Thank you, Sir!
Only one minute and how many emotions! Wonderful.
You're making me ready to play AC Black Flag this weekend.
Another home run - well done David!
